Enabling Leadership Program
Art of Work, co-founders of Safety Differently®, have developed and delivered the highly successful Enabling Leadership Program to thousands of people across numerous organisations and industries. The program has been designed to support leaders in building the required leadership knowledge and skills to successfully implement the Safety Differently® principles, tactics and practices.
Core to the program is the leadership shift from directing and telling people and reliance on behavioural traits to understanding work and what is required to facilitate successful work.
Enabling Leadership participants report that the core skills covered in the program have directly contributed to improved team member engagement, enhanced safe work performance outcomes, greater innovation and, importantly, demonstrated progress in applying Safety Differently thinking and practices.
Art of Work is now bringing the Enabling Leadership program to The Academy.
what is enabling leadership?
Enabling Leadership is about shifting practices and conversations from ‘telling and directing’ to ‘curiosity and engagement’, from ‘command and control’ to ‘enabling the success of your team’. Aimed at leaders who wish to develop their personal leadership style, create an environment of learning, empowerment and innovation, and who want to build capacity in an organisation that promotes an environment for outstanding performance improvement.
A leader’s success is and should be measured by a team’s performance.
who is this for?
You are keen to explore further Safety Differently® and the new view thinking and create the conditions for successful work in your organisation. The leaders who will benefit from this program are:
Senior Leaders - interested in introducing change across their organisation/division/business unit.
Operational Leaders / Line Managers - interested in evolving your leadership style to role model the ‘new view’ and create an inspiring example for others to follow.
Safety Leaders - interested in gaining insight into further operationalising the new view, supported by strategies and tactics to bring the new thinking alive in your organisation.
In essence, leaders and senior managers seeking to:
Engage their organisation and team to implementing Safety Differently® thinking and practice.
Build resilience within their teams and organisation to better manage change.
Transition from a ‘command and control’ leadership style to a more effective ‘coaching and enabling’ approach.
Confidently re-imagine and re-design work activities to be more successful.
Create the ongoing conditions for successful work.
The Enabling Leadership offering is broken into five stand-alone 2-hour online modules. People can pick and choose which module they would like to explore. It is recommended that the first Module - Core Enabling Leadership Principles is a helpful place to start, but it’s not mandatory.
Each module has an optional self-directed learning component that people can complete following the online session. This is designed to help people dig deeper and work on the concrete steps you need to take to put the learning into practice. The optional self-directed learning takes approximately an hour to complete.
Each Enabling Leadership Module is delivered online and in real-time, allowing for face-to-face online discussions and opportunities to explore the practical Enabling Leadership skills.
The learning is supported by the interactive Academy Portal, which contains all the materials plus bonus articles, videos and podcasts. Participants have access to the Portal for 12 months following participating in the Enabling Leadership program.

In this module, the question of why command and control style leadership has reached its use by date, along with what type of leadership is needed to make Safety Differently a reality, will be discussed.
Fundamental to improving work and safety is the need to rethink how we approach work and safety and the leadership required to embed the Safety Differently Principles.
People are the solution to harness, not the problem to control.
Work is about positive outcomes rather than the absence of negative outcomes.
Successful work is a shared responsibility rather than a bureaucratic activity.
The Enabling Leadership practices of engagement, enablement and creation of shared responsibility are explained in the context of understanding successful work, difficult work and work that has resulted in an unintended event.
Participants are introduced to the ten core principles of Enabling Leadership.
Focusing on Normal Work
Difference Between Work-as-Intended and Work-as-Done
Understanding what Helps and Hinders Work
The Power of Curiosity and Understanding Our Cognitive Biases
Freedom within a Framework Decision making
Trust Building and Psychological Safety
The centrality of Empathy
Motivation that sustains ownership and forward-facing accountability
Being clear on what is to be Solved.
Innovation through Fail to Safe Experiments.

In this module, the question of what type of problem is safety and work, is it simple, complicated or complex, will be discussed. The answer to this question will very much determine what a leader does next.
Leadership effectiveness can significantly improve when we understand what sort of problem or opportunity the leader and team are seeking to resolve. Each type of challenge, whether it be simple, complicated or complex, will require a different approach to be taken.
The leader’s ability to successfully navigate these challenges will also require a deeper appreciation of the cognitive biases we all bring and how we can counter these biases.
-
In this module, the question of why curiosity is important and what a leader needs to be curious about will be discussed, and how being curious is the one thing that can significantly improve how work is done.
Enabling Leaders look for ways to nurture curiosity, theirs and their team, in a way that fuels genuine discovery and learning. Greater curiosity leads to discovering how things really work or, in many cases, don’t work and what people rely on or need to do the work successfully, builds respect, trust and the open sharing of ideas, contributes to better solutions and leads to stronger ownership.
The practical curiosity skills are unpacked and practised, and at the end of the module, a curiosity challenge is set.
-
In this module, the question of what a leader can do in practice to build trust and psychological safety will be discussed, along with why this is mission-critical to any team’s success.
Trust is core to how a leader interacts with their team and how the team interacts with the leader and with one another. Core to facilitating successful work is the ability to learn, which is founded on trust and psychological safety, the capacity to speak with openness and actively take accountability for outcomes.
Trust is defined, and the practical skills for building trust are explored and practised, particularly in relation to Psychological Safety. Core to Enabling leadership is the ability to inspire trust, recognising that trust is something that can change everything.
-
In this module, the question of what truly motivates people to do anything will be discussed, along with how fail-safe experiments can lead to real innovation and sustainable performance improvements.
Enabling leadership focuses on intrinsic motivation and the leader's role in building a sense of shared purpose, providing opportunities for knowledge and skills mastery, and facilitating autonomy, leading to demonstrated ownership. The goal is to support people to turn their ideas into workable solutions and support the changes that emerge.
An essential part of this process is the use of fail-to-safe experiments. The steps for designing, deploying and evaluating these experiments are explained, and the connection to innovation and continuous improvement is considered.
